Why We Built Zap Cooking (And Why It’s Bigger Than Recipes)

Most recipe apps are optimized for ads.

Most recipe apps are optimized for ads.

Most creator platforms are optimized for engagement.

Most social networks are optimized for extraction.

We wanted to try something different.

The Problem With “Free” For years, creators have rented their audiences.

You build on Instagram.

You grow on YouTube.

You publish on Medium.

And one algorithm tweak can quietly erase your reach.

The platform owns distribution.

The platform owns monetization.

The platform owns the rules.

You just create.

That works — until it doesn’t.

Food Is the Perfect Trojan Horse Food is universal.

It’s not political.

It’s not niche.

It’s not locked behind expertise.

Everyone cooks. Everyone eats. Everyone gathers around a table.

If we were going to experiment with new models for publishing and community, food felt like the most human starting point.

So Zap Cooking became more than a recipe app.

It became a lab.

Built on Open Rails Zap Cooking runs on Nostr, an open protocol for publishing. That means:

You own your audience

Your content isn’t trapped in one platform

Payments can flow instantly via Bitcoin ⚡️

Communities can exist without centralized control

No engagement farming.

No shadow bans.

No gatekeepers deciding what wins.

Just open infrastructure.

Value for Value Instead of ads, we lean into value-for-value.

If someone learns from you, they can support you.

If a recipe inspires them, they can zap you instantly.

If a creator builds something meaningful, the community can fund it directly.

It’s simple.

It’s voluntary.

It’s aligned.

Why Substack? Substack is different energy.

It’s slower. More reflective. Essay-driven.

We’re here because we want to explore the philosophy behind what we’re building — not just ship features.

This is where we’ll think out loud about:

Creator sovereignty

Open protocols

Lightning economics

Building in public

And the intersection of food and freedom

Zap Cooking is still early.

We’re building in the open.

We’re breaking things and fixing them.

We’re experimenting publicly.

If that resonates, subscribe.

Let’s build a better kitchen for the internet.

Food. Friends. Freedom. ⚡️🍳
